Jonathan Prynn - Award Winning Journalist & Business Editor at the Evening Standard
With the support of Speakers4Schools, we were thrilled to welcome to Gumley, Jonathan Prynn, who spoke to our sixth form students on the news industry as well as his own study and career path
Jonathan Prynn is the award winning Consumer Business Editor of the Evening Standard with a wide ranging career background of business, City, consumer and political newspaper reporting over 30 years.
Most recently he has been instrumental in launching ‘The Last Straw’ Campaign, to eradicate plastic straws from London’s streets specifically calling on the capital’s restaurants, bars and cafes to commit to switching to alternatives.
Jonathan also led the paper’s coverage of the banking crisis but additionally, writes about property, restaurants and transport. He has also worked on The Times as Transport Correspondent during British Rail privatisation and Political Correspondent during the later years of the Major Government.
He was educated at Furze Platt Comprehensive School, Maidenhead, and Pembroke College, Oxford. He was the first pupil in the history of his school to win a place at Oxford in an arts subject.
Students’ feedback was very positive and extensive in identifying the degree of knowledge they gained, which included: The evolution of news reporting, recommended degree subjects & career tips, some fantastic examples of news influencing external opinion to the scope of topics journalists investigate and report on.
