Transition & Induction

STARTING SECONDARY SCHOOL CAN BE DAUNTING BUT WE’RE CONFIDENT THAT ONCE OUR GIRLS HAVE BEEN HERE FOR A FEW DAYS, THEY’LL FEEL PART OF THE GUMLEY FAMILY.

We make sure of this by giving them the best start possible.

Our induction programme aims to provide new students with the opportunities to meet with their future staff and peers as well as experience life at Gumley, long before their first day. It also allows us to get to know each girl’s interests and talents in order to create a personalised learning experience for them.

Below are some key features:

Friendship Afternoon, March

The programme begins with our Friendship Afternoon in March to welcome new families to our school and ensure that we start to get to know your child long before they begin with us in September. Pupils are invited in for an afternoon of fun activities with their future peers; while parents hear from our senior leaders and have a chance to ask questions.

Induction Day, July

A full day filled with taster lessons, fun activities and Gumley’s Got Talent! This is an excellent opportunity for our new students to get an insight into what life will be like for them at Gumley.

Activity Booklets

Over the Summer Term, pupils have the opportunity to complete an All About Me Booklet which allows us to find out more about them, their interests and hobbies, what they might be worried about and what they might be looking forward to at secondary school.

Over the Summer Holidays, pupils are asked to complete a Summer Challenges Booklet. This is an excellent opportunity to prepare them for their studies in September.

Start of Term, September

All students begin the new academic year a day ahead of the rest of the school. This allows students to find their way around and get to know their peers and form tutors.

Continuous transition

Transition does not end on our girls' first day, it is part of each key stage to support them throughout their time at Gumley. Throughout their first term, we host a number of team building activities, a Roller Disco, Curriculum Extension Days and a Welcome Mass. Our new students can also take advantage of our peer mentoring and Year 8 buddy schemes.

WHAT OUR NEW STARTERS SAY:

I’m so lucky that I got into Gumley. Compared to primary, it is such a big school but after a couple of days you really get to know the place. Plus, the teachers are so welcoming. I have enjoyed my first term and I can’t wait to see what awaits.

Isimeme, former St James’ Primary School pupil

Gumley hosted a Friendship Afternoon and Induction Day to help us experience life at Gumley and get to know other students before joining in September. My first term has been very enjoyable; I have learnt lots of new things including Chinese!

Channelle, former St Mark’s Primary School pupil

I have enjoyed my first term so much! I have been introduced to many new subjects, my favourites being languages, sport and music. I am looking forward to growing my knowledge and becoming confident in all that I do.

Chiara, former St Joseph's RC Primary School pupil

The move from primary school was easy because of Gumley’s Friendship Afternoon and Induction Day where I met some of my closest friends. There’s so much to do outside of your lessons. I take part in the Drama club and the Mandarin in Excellence Programme; and am looking forward to the Drama and Music festivals.

Lydia, former St James’ Primary School pupil

The Gumley girls and staff were so welcoming and friendly, I feel I have settled in well. In my first term I loved celebrating Black History month, participating in a drama showcase. I would like to become a lawyer in the future, and I believe Gumley can help me in pursuing this desire.

Lara, former St Lawrence's Catholic Primary School pupil

The buddy system, Head of Year 7 and my form tutor all supported me with my move to Gumley. I have settled in nicely. My favourite part of last term was making the Christmas boxes for charity because I was able to work with my friends and be creative.

Meg, former St Mary’s Catholic Primary School Isleworth pupil

One of the best things about Gumley is the range of opportunities they provide after school where you can find at least one club within your interest. I am looking forward to learning new subjects such as Computer Science, Textiles and Food Technology. I can’t wait to take on and enjoy anything that Gumley throws at me!

Yohana, former St Lawrence's RC Primary School pupil

Gumley supported me to settle in by organising a Friendship Afternoon and Induction Day. Since starting, I have enjoyed meeting new friends and incredible teachers.

Chloe, former St Mary’s Catholic Primary School Chiswick pupil
