Scholars Programme
Bespoke Programme for the Aspiring Scholar
High achieving students at The Sixth are eligible for the Gumley Scholars’ Programme which aims to empower them to stand out and secure places at Oxbridge and Russell Group universities or esteemed job placements.
This is achieved through the experiences provided on our university, careers and enrichment pathways as well as unique experiences bespoke to each scholar’s individual needs, goals and interests.

EPQ
Scholars are required to do the Extended Project Qualification, an intellectually rigorous qualification providing the chance to gain their first taste of university study as they take on the challenge and have the freedom to research a topic area of their choice. They receive guidance by a dedicated mentor and weekly sessions, covering topics such as time and project management, how to collect and analyse data, how to plan and write an academic paper and how to critique drafts.
Visit our dedicated page studying the EPQ.
External speakers
We actively seek expert speakers from universities and global organisations to ensure our students are equipped with personalised undergraduate advice and market intelligence for the world of work. Example speakers include the University of West London, Imperial College London, the Evening Standard, Barclays and Gumley alumni. These open our scholars’ minds to the career and educational pathways available to them.
Workshops
Scholars attend a number of workshops on matters such as academic writing and research skills, Oxbridge and Russell Group application support and interview preparation.
Conferences
Through video conferences and webinars, scholars can connect with national and international universities and businesses on a range of topics related to their studies, areas of interest and future educational and career choices.
Work experience
We support our scholars in securing and participating in meaningful work experience, enabling them to experience and understand the work environment, gain new skills, network and expand their contacts. Past placements have included GlaxoSmithKline, the Ministry of Justice Civil Service and CISCO.
Pull out: "I thoroughly enjoyed my work experience placement at GlaxoSmithKline. I was able to meet some incredible professionals within the department of pharmacology and had countless opportunities to learn more about the divergent jobs within the field.” Tabitha Bower
Summer programmes
Scholars have the opportunity to acquire places on summer programmes such as Eton and Oxford summer schools and the McKinsey Leadership Academy. These focus on increasing academic learning beyond the scope of the curriculum, experiencing university life and developing leadership and practical work competencies all whilst boosting CVs and university applications. Many of our students also undertake the FCJ Leadership Award.
From my experience at the McKinsey Leadership Academy I now understand how much goes into being a great leader. It was a demanding two days which taught me about myself and the most effective ways to work with others. I feel I now have the skills to be a successful leader and that’s something that will stay with me for life.
