A Trip to Berlin

In October, Year 11 and Year 13 historians visited Berlin for four days to support their learning in the GCSE History modules about Weimar & Nazi Germany and the Cold War, as well as the A-level unit about Germany before and after World War Two. This trip to the historic and culturally significant capital of Germany will serve as an outstanding boost to their knowledge and understanding of Berlin and its role in 20th century history.

The students visited an array of important sites, including
  • a guided tour of Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp,
  • the Berlin Wall Memorial,
  • the famous East Side Gallery,
  • the Brandenburg Gate,
  • The memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
  • Checkpoint Charlie,
  • the rooftop terrace and glass dome of the Reichstag Building,
  • The DDR museum to learn about life behind the 'Iron Curtain' in East Germany
  • A former gas container that became a world war two and cold war bunker
  • And a plethora of statues and monuments on a walking tour - including the car park that was once Hitler's bunker.
All of the students had a fantastic trip, and throughout their time in Germany they demonstrated the Gumley values of companionship, excellence and dignity. We congratulate them on the amazing young people that they are and look forward to seeing them achieve outstanding results in their history exams next year.
Planning for the 2025 trip is already underway!
