Curriculum Intent

At Gumley House our curriculum intent is to support a happy, high achieving learning community enriched by the opportunity to discover talents and passions.  We work in close partnership with parents to provide a balanced caring education and continually plan and build our curriculum so that academic knowledge, enrichment and life skills match the high aspirations of our learners and allow them to make the strongest progress over time.  We ensure our students experience a blend of traditional, academic and vocational subjects while and developing the skills needed for the 21st Century. 

The FCJ model of personal and academic excellence encourages us to consider our curriculum regularly to ensure we are serving the needs of the students to, not only successfully progress into further education, training or employment, but to also give them a broad understanding of the world and the key issues which, we believe, make them into well-informed, well-grounded adults.  Our fundamental belief is that all students are entitled to an individually tailored and holistic education.

Our Curriculum Leaders have devised an ambitious and aspirational curriculum which uses the National Curriculum as a minimum expectation.  They have ensured that their content is well-sequenced, is built on prior learning, and has a moral purpose behind it.  Accompanying our ‘timetabled’ curriculum is a varied extra-curricular enrichment offer to provide a rounded learning experience.  This gives Gumley House a unique curriculum offer which we are very proud of, which prepares our students to be the best they can be in school, as citizens in their community and in their future.

Gumley's KS3 and KS4 curriculum is designed as a 5 year spiral curriculum where key concepts are presented repeatedly through the curriculum but with deepening layers of complexity.  This is to ensure that all students are offered a rich curriculum that provides them with a deep understanding of content and skills to prepare them for life at Gumley and beyond.  The National curriculum content is carefully tracked to ensure that students have covered all areas of non-statutory KS4 subjects by the end of Year 8.  The curriculum is delivered in 50 minute slots, and there are 30 periods in the taught week.

Curriculum Implementation
Every leader at Gumley House believes that a carefully planned and structured curriculum is the foundation upon which excellent learning and development is built.  As mentioned above, our curriculum is designed and implemented in such a way that it builds on prior knowledge and prepares students for the next stage in their education. This is complimented by the FCJ schools' ‘Vision and Values’ philosophy.  Additionally, our ‘Gumley 10’, created and evaluated regularly by staff, ensures that lessons are engaging and suitably differentiated so that students spend the large majority of time in lesson working independently at their level of ability.

Development of language and building knowledge are integral to curriculum planning.  Subject Leaders, who are experts in their subjects, carefully construct a curriculum that promotes a deep understanding of a wide range of topics.  Teachers plan learning that allows students to embed and recall knowledge through techniques such as interleaving of topics and spaced practice.  This builds firm foundations for progression to the next level and exam success. 


Year 7 to 8
Our Key Stage 3 (Years 7 and 8) provides a thorough academic grounding in a broad range of subjects.  Curriculum Leaders have designed a progressive and cumulative curriculum with the aim of ensuring all students develop a deeper understanding of the bigger concepts and what links learning together. Students are encouraged to focus on deeper learning to ensure real understanding of key concepts.  Each key topic studied has a planned learning journey with clear statements setting out what students need to know, understand and do to reach their aspirational target grade

Year 9:  A Transitional Curriculum
Students begin their option subjects in year 9, with this year serving as a foundation to GCSE/BTEC.  Acquiring the learning skills and attributes to become an independent learner underpins the curriculum experience for study in Key Stage 4.  Lessons prepare for outstanding success at GCSE and for the demands of the further studies in The Sixth.  This gateway year allows a curriculum that is rich and one which focuses on building up the acquisition of skills and love of learning the subject.

Learning is designed to develop higher order thinking skills and increases significantly in intellectual challenge as students progress through the school.

In 10 and 11 we provide an even more personalised curriculum, with all students studying Religious Studies, English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science and core Physical Education.  Options are structured in such a way to allow students a free choice.  This ensures equity of delivery, with all students having equal access to subjects. The options are designed to stretch and challenge students and to meet the demands of the local labour market. Students are offered a mixture of practical and academic subjects from all areas of the curriculum. Within the option subjects, Gumley offers a range of different accreditation routes including academic and vocational options.  This gives every student a broad and balanced curriculum, but still offers a flexibility to maximise the outcomes achieved by each individual. This model also maintains the widest possible choice for progression routes Post 16 as every student will have a greater range of subjects on which to choose future opportunities for education and training

A choice of option subjects is offered including Art, Business Studies, Computer Science, Food & Nutrition, Geography, Health and Social Care, History, MFL (Chinese, French, Italian and Spanish), Music, Photography, Physical Education, Textile Technology and Triple Science.  Our Key Stage 4 is also geared towards students’ individual aptitudes and skills, and some students have the opportunity to study additional subjects such as Latin and Statistics.


The Sixth

We have three established pathways our Sixth Form which prepares our students for the transition from school to university or further study of choice.  Our bespoke pathways offer students a wide variety of choice with most students taking 3 or 4 A Levels in Year 12 and Year 13 and the vast majority of our students go on to gain places at leading universities, apprenticeships or further education.

Curriculum Impact
At Gumley House, our curriculum will:

  • ensure that the sequence of learning builds on previous knowledge whilst supporting future progression.
  • lead to qualifications that are of worth for employers and for entry to further and higher education.

  • meet the needs of students of all abilities.
  • allow students to acquire an appreciation and respect for their own and other cultures.
  • prepare students to compete in the global economy.
  • prepare students to make informed choices at the end of KS3, KS4 and beyond.
  • help students develop lively, enquiring minds and the ability to question and argue rationally.


Careers and Work Experience

All students will receive guidance interviews through both key stages, intensifying as they grow through the school. Individual interviews help them to make informed choices about their educational or work related pathways at the end of Year 11.  For more information visit our Careers page.
