Catholic Social Teaching

Our contribution to Catholic Social Teaching and the Common Good is an integral part of living out our FCJ Values.

We support international, national and local charities throughout the school year.  We also respond to current needs when aid is required and we can serve.

Our Chaplain, leadership team and dedicated staff inspire students to contribute in order to make this world a better place.  In doing so, the pupils at Gumley House continually demonstrate love for all members of God's family and our world (our Eco School status is a response to Care for Creation).

An essential part of the Catholic faith, the key values of Catholic Social Teaching, are found at the core of the Gospel.  Awareness of social justice issues are promoted through our weekly assemblies, in RE lessons and through the PSHE programme. Some of the charities we have supported over the past three years, include:

From our 'Advent in Action':

How do CST link with our school values?

There are 7 principles of Catholic Social Teaching, we are called to uphold them.

  • Human Dignity:
‘What makes me special?’ ‘What makes people special? ‘How should we treat each other?’
God made each person, so every life is important and should be protected.
  • Family, Community and Participation
How can we ensure that all are treated equally and take part in society?
God made us to be part of communities, families and countries, so all people can share and help each other.

  • Common Good/ Rights and Responsibilities:
What is ‘true community’? The common good is reached when we work together to improve the wellbeing of people in our society and the wider world. How do we respect all in our community?
God wants us to help make sure everyone is safe and healthy and can have a good life.

  • Solidarity:
Who are our leaders? How do we stand with others? How did Jesus show service and justice?  How do we help our neighbour?
God made everyone - so we are all brothers and sisters in God's family wherever we live.
  • Dignity in Work:
How do we protect workers and ensure fair wages? How do ensure workers are respected and work for their vocation?
Work is important for God's plan for adults and their families, so jobs and pay should be fair.

  • Sharing God's World, Protecting the Poor
     and Vulnerable:
How do pupils share at home and at school? What are the kinds of things that are shared? Should everyone get exactly the same? Should some people get more? Why? For example, families with more children might need more resources, or someone with a disability might need extra help.
  • God wants us to help people who are poor. who don't have enough food, a safe place to live, or a community.

  • Caring for God's World:
How do I show respect for Creation? The earth and all life on it are part of God’s creation. We are called to respect this gift. We are responsible for taking care of the world we live in and for sharing all the wonders and resources the earth gives us.
  • The world was made by God.  It's not ours - we are simply stewards of the earth, so we take care of all creation.
